Philosophy of Education
St. Michael School has built its philosophy of education on the ministry of the Catholic Church, which emphasizes the dignity of each individual as created by God. Teaching as Jesus did, we foster the intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual development of our students. In partnership with parents, our teachers and administrators encourage our children to realize their full potential, embrace their mission as disciples of Christ, and contribute to our ever-changing, multicultural world in the context of our Catholic identity.
In September 1913, under the direction of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael, St. Michael's Academy opened. The St. Michael School has been an important part of St. Michael Parish since its inception. From the founding pastor, Father Patrick Power, to the present pastor, the parish has sponsored the school as a significant part of the Catholic Church's teaching ministry.
The original facility featured classrooms, sisters' living quarters, and living spaces for a few young girls who went on board during the week and returned on weekends to their ranch families. Subsequently, two classroom buildings were added to provide students in grades one through eight with homeroom classrooms. St. Michael Education Center is the initial building which offered space for Faith Formation as well as additional classrooms, a school library, a technology lab, and offices for administration. A kindergarten opened in September 1988. A new Education Center was built in 2003-2004 and the original building was demolished. An education initiative with efficient infrastructure, iPads, Macbooks, and 1: 1 computers in middle school was introduced over the course of 2011-2015. In 2015, a Transitional Kindergarten, K-8 Spanish program and instrumental music (recorders) were created.
